Panel Item SubHeader and grouping

I see that the PanelItem allows for a subheader. Is this a property I would use if I wanted to institute some grouping in this list? I like the styling flexibility of the items in this list, but I would like to be able to set some logical groups in this list as well to make it easier for the user to find items when the list is long. What is the best way to implement this?
