Issue with only one item in drop down

I gave a drop down that is populated from database.

if there is only one record returned for the drop down and the user clicks on the drop down then the record is displayed. If the user does not select the record, goes to another field on the form, then again clicks on the drop down the single record is not displayed.

if you type something valid in the search then the record is displayed in the drop down list.

What do I do to fix this.
